Strategic Plan for Data Sharing
NIH has a longstanding commitment to making the results of NIH-funded research available. Responsible data management and sharing has many benefits, including accelerating the pace of biomedical research, enabling validation of research results, and providing accessibility to high-value datasets.
NIH encourages the sharing of data whenever possible and encourages researchers to select the repository that is most appropriate for their data type and discipline. Several NIH policies provide guidance about how, when, and where researchers are expected to make the results of NIH-funded research available.

NIH Common Data Elements
To catalyze new capabilities in biomedical data science by providing trans-NIH leadership and coordination for modernization of the NIH data resource ecosystem, development of a diverse and talented data science workforce, and building strategic partnerships to develop and disseminate advanced technologies and methods.
To support the development of a robust biomedical data ecosystem, NIH is engaged with the Research Data Alliance (RDA) to develop, promote, and help adopt data-sharing frameworks and community principles (e.g., FAIR principles), standards, and best practices.
